The 5th annual BLT 1000/1600 is planned for this summer. This years’ long distance endurance ride will cover 1000 kms in 14 hours (for those less experienced or less sure of heart) or 1600 kms or more in 24 hours for the serious or experienced long distance rider.
The rally will be held from June 20th to June 22nd, 2008, with the pre-rally meet and greet on June 20th, 2008.
In 2008 the rally will once again begin and end at the The Econo Lodge, the designated ALDERS Rally hotel and headquarters.
Registration is officially open. All riders will be screened by ALDER club executive and the club reserves the right to refuse entrance to anyone who could not safely compete.
The format for 2008 will be 14 hours of riding through some of the most beautiful country the Maritimes offer. All riders will be able to follow his or her daytime route. Then, to complete the final 600 kms, an overnight route with less scenery (obviously, since it’s dark) will complete the ride. There may be several different routes to ensure the minimum kilometres are achieved. For the challenge and to get into the winners circle, bonuses will be available all along the routes. Serious riders will find some interesting and perhaps foolhardy choices. Of course, the event is timed. Points will be given for every kilometre ridden and every bonus point documented but being late at a check point will be very costly. Points will be deducted for every minute you are late checking in.
Documentation of bonus points will sometimes require a photo. A Polaroid or digital camera is required. If using a digital camera, it must have a time/date function and all pictures must be in chronological order to qualify. Not all bonuses will require a photo.
Entry fees for this years event will be $50. This will cover such things as Friday nights meet and greet, insurance, prizes, gifts for the checkpoint volunteers, the post rally awards meeting and a few other sundry items. The fee is the same for each distance. Your entry fee not only gets you into the only Maritime long distance endurance rally in Canada, but also gets you a great rally shirt, a rally towel and a chance at several door prizes. The post rally meet is planned for Sunday morning, June 22nd when the awards will be handed out.
We are able to keep the entry fee low because of the great sponsorship of Hi Tech Power Sports located at 245 Baig Blvd. Moncton, New Brunswick. They have graciously agreed to sponsor the event and the Friday evening meet and greet is planned for their store. In addition Hi Tech will carry out the tech inspections of all participating bikes, as well as have a truck available for pick ups should a rider encounter any unforeseen difficulty.
Position plaques will be awarded to the top three finishers in each of the 1000 and 1600 km categories. Note that you will not be allowed to win both categories. The competition you indicate on your application will apply throughout. If you register for 1600 kms and decide to quit at 1000, you will be considered a DNF. If you had registered for the 1000 km rally, you would be a finisher and, depending on your placing would perhaps get a plaque as well as a finishers award.
The 2008 BLT 1000/1600 should be an interesting and challenging rally. It should be great fun and provide some gorgeous scenery if you take time to look. I hope to foster an atmosphere of camaraderie. For those of you riding your first long distance endurance event, you will find it tiring and challenging but personally rewarding.
